The bedding ceremony refers to the wedding custom of putting the newlywed couple together in the marital bed before numerous witnesses, thereby completing the marriage. In most traditions the newlyweds were put in bed by their family, friends, and neighbors. The purpose of the ritual was to establish the consummation of the marriage, either by actually witnessing the couple's first sexual intercourse or symbolically, by leaving before consummation. It symbolized the community's involvement in the marriage.

We had 14 men actively take part in the consummation of our marriage. There was a lot of community involvement.

It is done to insure that the marriage is consummated. Although different from divorce, a spouse in some states may seek to have his marriage annulled, treated as if it never happened, for lack of consummation. Connecticut law, for example, permits annulment if a spouse concealed her intent before the marriage to never consummate the marriage.

In the Mariana Islands, it is still common, when a couple announces their engagement, for the wife-to-be to have sex (only) with the other men in the family for the following 366 days. It is believed that a woman having had sex with all of the other men in the family is the only way to ensure the happiness of the husband-to-be on his wedding day and afterward. Each night, for 366 days, the wife-to-be will engage in all forms of sexual activity with all of the other men in the husband-to-be's family. During this time, the husband-to-be is to remain chaste. This is done to prove his love for his wife-to-be. If the husband-to-be does have sexual relations with his wife-to-be, or any other woman, during these 366 days, it is proof to both families that love for the wife-to-be does not exist.

On each of the 366 days, the husband-to-be must present his wife to each male family member, and leave her with one man for the night, and in the morning retrieve her. If the other family male is married, his wife will witness the sex her husband has with the wife-to-be. If the man the wife-to-be is having sex with that night is single, it is required that at least one other man be there to witness the sex, to insure that the sex actually occurs. After these 366 days, it is expected that any sexual wish or desire the husband may have will be easily satisfied by the wife-to-be, because by the end of the 366 days she would have experienced any type of sexual activity that her husband may desire.

The week prior to the wedding, the husband-to-be,and the family of the wife-to-be, is invited to watch all of the other males, in the family of the husband-to-be, have sex with the wife-to-be. This is to show the husband-to-be, and the family of the wife-to-be, what the wife-to-be has experienced and what she knows, has learned and can do. In this culture, is it not unheard of for a wife-to-be to be a virgin when she and her husband-to-be announce their plan to marry. If the wife-to-be is, in fact, a virgin, it is customary for the wife-to-be to lose her virginity to her father-in-law-to-be. The father of the wife-to-be will present his daughter to the father of the husband-to-be. This is how the father of the wife-to-be gives his blessing to the couple. It is believed that for a man to marry a virgin is to settle with what no one else has wanted. When a woman has had sex with different men, everyday, for 366 days, she is then seen as worthy of marrying.

If the wife-to-be refuses to have sex, for any reason, with any of the male family members related to the husband-to-be, it is seen as a sign that she truly does not love her husband-to-be. It tells the family of the husband-to-be that she does not accept his family, or him. This would end the engagement. And the wife-to-be would be considered, by both families, to be unfit for marriage, to anyone, at any time. Therefore, it is imperative for a wife-to-be to show her love for her husband-to-be by showing that she is willing to be all that he needs.
